PATH 0100 - Introduction to Pathology

Credit(s): 4 Credits

Lectures: Students are expected to attend lectures and to give the lecturer their full attention (i.e., no texting, facebooking, tweeting, emailing or other media during lecture). Information is presented in lecture that is not readily available from another resource. Not all material covered in the course is presented in lecture. Lecture topics are included on tests. Special recorded Lectures: there are seven Special recorded lectures that will be posted on the course site for the section of the course when they should be reviewed. Students are expected to review these short lectures. The material in the Special Recorded Lectures is included on tests even if it is not covered in live lectures. Laboratory sessions: Students are expected to attend and participate in the pathology laboratory sessions. This is the first time you will see what your patients look like ""inside"". Several of the labs are active exercises where you work on ""unknown"" clinical cases. Not all material covered in lab sessions is presented in lecture. Unknown lab sessions are ""open book,"" and these exercises in lab will be made easier by bringing your histology and/or Robbins pathology text book to lab. Points can be earned in lab sessions as described below under Grading. Material unique to the laboratories are included on tests. Robbins Pathology Case Studies: Students are expected to review assigned images and cases in Robbins Pathology Case Studies site on the Student Consult web site. These cases are also available at the URL for the Robbins Interactive Case Studies at http://chatref.slu.edu/robbins/ . These cases can also be accessed by going to the Student Consult Website if you purchase the text book. Work time and work groups are scheduled during labs, and review sessions are also scheduled. It is useful to review this material before the unknown lab exercises as application of case study material knowledge will be possible in unknown labs. Topics not covered in lecture or in the review session will be included in the assigned case studies and images. We recommend learning the concept the image illustrates; do not memorize images. Some cases will be covered in review sessions, others will not. A complete listing of all of the images and cases that you should review is included in the Robbins Pathology Case Studies section of the syllabus and on the checklist but the actual material is not included in the syllabus. The material in the Robbins Pathology Case Studies is included on tests even if it is not covered in lectures. Clinicopathologic Correlation: Group study and presentation preparation for CPCs can be done at the scheduled time. Students are assigned to groups (see below) but can change to a different group or work alone if they wish. Pathology faculty and residents will be available during the CPC scheduled times to answer questions and provide guidance. Individual students or student groups who turn in answers to questions included with each CPC on the presentation day for the CPC's will receive points as described below, under Grading. The material presented in the CPC presentations is included on tests. Working with a Pathologist: Students can have a one-hour session with a hospital pathologist as they perform their work in the University Hospital or Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. The objective of this experience is to inform you of the role of the pathologist in the care of the patient and to illustrate the application of the knowledge you are gaining in Introduction to Pathology to the clinical practice of medicine. Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board outside of the Office of Curricular Affairs in the LRC. Students who have signed up for a session meet at a site announced in class (generally in M300 or Lecture Hall C) at the scheduled time. You must wear your white coat and attire appropriate for patient care areas in the hospital. Please do not bring backpacks, etc. as there may not be a secure place to store them during your meeting with the pathologist. A pathologist will escort the group to the pathologist in the hospital. The material learned during this session will not be included in the test material.

PATH 5010 - Pathobiology

Credit(s): 3-5 Credits

Open to students in the School of Medicine and to qualified graduate students by permission. General pathology and the basic mechanisms of cell and tissue injury. Offered every fall semester.

PATH 5020 - Molecular Pathobiology

Credit(s): 4 Credits

A continuation of PT-G 501. Pathology and pathophysiology of diseases on cellular/molecular basis. Lecture and group discussions. Offered every spring semester.

PATH 5350 - Intro to Microscopy Techniques

Credit(s): 1-3 Credits

Lecture and laboratory course on the application of light and electron microscopic techniques in biomedical research. Hands-on experience at the microscope and practical approaches to problem solving will be emphasized. The course includes practical aspects of light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy as well as transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Offered every other fall semester.

PATH 5380 - Immunopathology

Immunology pertaining to human diseases and animal models emphasized. Offered occasionally.

PATH 6900 - Mol. Pathobiology Journal Club
