EM 0305 - Emergency Medicine Career Exploration - St. Mary's Hospital

EM 0410 - Emergency Medicine

Credit(s): 1-12 Credits

Please note: Students should have taken Internal Medicine and/or Surgery clerkships prior to taking this course. This elective will provide Emergency Medicine exposure with primary patient care experience under supervision. Students will have a varied clinical schedule that covers a variety of days, nights, and weekends, totaling 96-120 hours in three weeks. We will try to honor two requested days off, based on priorities, but no more than two. One or more of the student's shifts may be at one of our other community hospital partners. They will participate in procedural techniques as well as in the initial evaluation and treatment of a wide range of emergency conditions. They will also have an opportunity to participate in an optional EMS observational shift. This course is also designed: To provide clinical patient contact with exposure to a wide range of emergency conditions and procedural techniques in a variety of settings. To broaden the students' knowledge of emergency medical services (EMS)/pre-hospital care and the role that EMS plays in the practice of Emergency Medicine. (See provided EMS ride along description in the Orientation Manual).

EM 0411 - Emergency Medicine Ultrasound and Clinical Decision-Making

Point-of-care clinical ultrasonography is an important diagnostic tool in the evaluation of patients presenting to the emergency department and in critically ill patients. This course is intended to provide an introduction to point-of-care clinical ultrasound. The course will be two to four weeks in duration. In this course, you will learn how to use the ultrasound to evaluate both medical and trauma patients. You will be introduced to the basic function of the ultrasound machine, proper probe & test selection, basic ultrasound physics, proper ultrasound exam performance, and interpretation of imaging results in the clinical context. This course will set a foundation for further developing your clinical decision making skills with reinforcement of core clinical concepts.

EM 0412 - Emergency Medicine Mastery Course

EM 0413 - Emergency Electrocardiography

Credit(s): 2-12 Credits

Students will learn the application of and interpretation of electrocardiograms in Emergency Medicine by learning a systematic approach to analysis with appropriate clinical correlation. The students will have four 1 hour-long lectures and assigned readings. The course will review the basic fundamental principals of electrocardiography. Furthermore, students will demonstrate the ability to obtain 50 electrocardiograms from emergency department patients, as well as the ability to place patients on continuous electrocardiography. Students will have to complete a 50-question pre and post test, in addition, based upon assigned reading assignments.

EM 0414 - Wilderness Medicine

Wilderness Medicine is a 2-week non-direct patient care elective that teaches the practice of medicine in the wilderness and other resource limited settings. Specific clinical skills that students will learn include first aid, rapid clinical assessments, stabilization and field-expedient definitive care. Course features include lectures, hands-on practical sessions, skills labs, field trips and an overnight camping trip. DISCLAIMER: This course is subject to change according to weather and other external factors. If the enrollment for this course does not meet the required number of 6 students, the section will be canceled.

EM 0416 - Emergency Medicine Bootcamp

Credit(s): 1-4 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This 2-week elective is intended for 4th year medical students pursuing a career in emergency medicine (EM), who have completed EM-410 but are unable to pursue away electives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be provided with opportunities for a letter of recommendation primarily written by the course director, Tina Chen. Students will participate in simulated patient encounters intended to reinforce knowledge of commonly encountered clinical pathologies in the emergency department (ED). Students will also be introduced to select advanced, high-acuity clinical topics and invasive procedures in preparation for intern year. The course will emphasize interpersonal and communication skills needed for effective patient advocacy and healthy working relationships.

EM 0901 - Emergency Medicine Direct Patient Care

This course may be used to register for an Emergency Medicine elective. The elective experience must fulfill the requirements for a direct-patient care elective. The location of the experience may be at a SLU SOM affiliate or at another health care institution.
