Description

The English as a Second Language Program at Saint Louis University delivers INTO Saint Louis University's Academic English and Pathway Programs. These programs support and prepare international students for successful undergraduate and graduate careers at Saint Louis University by strengthening their English language and intercultural communication skills while introducing them to university-level academic expectations.

Mission Statement

Saint Louis University's English as a Second Language Program is motivated by the knowledge that SLU is enriched by the global perspectives and cross-cultural exchanges that international students make possible. The program's mission is to prepare academically talented English language learners for successful careers as undergraduate and graduate students at Saint Louis University through our commitment to excellence in teaching, service and learning.

Our academic English and pathway programs integrate language study, academic skills and cultural awareness. They foster in students the intellectual curiosity that leads to recognition of a higher purpose to which we all contribute. We embrace and enact the Jesuit tradition of Saint Louis University by uniting the pursuit of individual academic excellence with our dedication to developing a community of men and women for others.

Academic English

Academic English is designed for students who need intensive English language study before beginning an undergraduate or graduate pathway program. Upon successful completion of academic English, students may progress to the undergraduate or graduate pathway program.

Pathway Programs

The undergraduate and graduate pathway programs are ideal for international students who need additional English language and academic preparation before continuing to a degree program at Saint Louis University. Pathway programs combine intensive language study, academic skills development and credit-bearing coursework in a customized curriculum designed to move students successfully into their undergraduate or graduate degree program.

English for International Students

The ESL program offers English composition, rhetoric and literature classes for international students. These courses are equivalent to their counterparts in the Department of English.

The Academic English and Pathway Program Student Handbook is an introduction to your time at INTO Saint Louis University and a guide to policies and procedures followed by the ESL program. The handbook contains information about continuation, progression, and matriculation as well as information about the curriculum, advising, and academic support for students enrolled in academic English or pathway programs.

AEP 0100 - Writing and Grammar Level 1: Beginner

4 Credits

This beginner-level course helps students build foundational grammar and writing skills by using the academic writing process to produce sentences and basic paragraphs of 100-200 words. Students study the highest-frequency grammatical items beginning with parts of speech, simple present and past verbs, and imperatives. Students learn strategies for noticing their grammar errors. Proficiency level: beginner. Offered fall, spring and summer.

AEP 0120 - Reading and Vocabulary Level 1: Beginner

4 Credits

This course builds students’ reading and vocabulary skills by developing strategies necessary for comprehending of beginner-level academic texts. Students develop a working vocabulary of high-frequency English words and learn to skim, scan, annotate, determine the topic, and identify main ideas. Proficiency level: beginner. Offered fall, spring and summer.

AEP 0130 - Listening and Speaking Level 1: Beginner

4 Credits

This course builds students’ speaking and listening skills by working on beginner-level listening comprehension, pronunciation, and conversation skills. Students learn high-frequency vocabulary to build a functional language repertoire that allows them to comprehend basic English words and phrases and to speak in simple phrases using common expressions. Students learn note-taking techniques to help them focus their listening and recall course content more accurately. Proficiency level: beginner. Offered fall, spring and summer.

AEP 0200 - Writing and Grammar Level 2: High Beginner

4 Credits

This high beginner-level course improves students writing and grammar skills by using the academic writing process to produce sentences, paragraphs, and short essays of 250-500 words. Students learn about different types of academic writing tasks and begin using teacher-selected sources to support their ideas. Students build their fluency with high-frequency grammatical items like imperatives, simple present and past verbs, and past participles. Students develop awareness of their own grammar errors. Proficiency level: high beginner.

AEP 0220 - Reading and Vocabulary Level 2: High Beginner

4 Credits

This course develops students reading and vocabulary skills by focusing on strategies necessary for comprehending high beginner-level academic texts. This course engages international students in service learning as part of the mission of Saint Louis University and fosters a consciousness social justice. Students participate in organized service activities and discuss and reflect upon their experiences in class. Proficiency level: high beginner.

AEP 0300 - Writing and Grammar Level 3: Intermediate

3 Credits

This intermediate-level course emphasizes writing as a multi-step process that leads to the completion of thesis-driven academic essays of 750 words. Students practice writing in different modes and incorporating evidence from teacher-selected sources to support their thesis. This includes understanding the academic writing process and composing in various rhetorical modes. Students will be introduced to academic research, synthesizing materials from various sources, and proficiency in MLA format. This course aims to improve students’ level of grammar from the intermediate to the high-intermediate level of targeted grammar points. Students review high-frequency forms and learn strategies for coping with low-frequency items.

Students select and write in a genre that is appropriate to the task and incorporate evidence from sources to support their arguments. This course aims to improve students’ level of grammar from the high-intermediate to the low-advanced level of targeted grammar points. This course explores contemporary issues from local, national, and global perspectives and prepares students to become active participants in American university-level courses. Students reflect on their roles and challenges as international students studying in the United States. Course topics also serve as themes used to develop language skills in the other Level 4 courses. Students learn to think critically, communicate effectively in speech and writing, and listen and take notes during lectures. Through course readings, research, writing and oral presentations and discussions, students further develop their academic and language skills necessary for university success. Offered fall, spring and summer. Prerequisite: 2.50 semester GPA in Level 3 or equivalent.

This introduction to human geography course is for international students at a B1 proficiency as defined in CEFR, which describes one’s ability at this level to “understand the main points of clear standard input” and “describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions.” Students will learn the basics of geographic inquiry, apply their skills to the study of a local place, and present their findings on a website they build for this course. By considering places and systems through a variety of stakeholders’ perspectives, students will recognize the interdependence of people and places around the globe.

This high-intermediate course refines students’ application of reading and vocabulary strategies that aid in comprehension of high-intermediate texts. These skills include identifying main ideas and supporting details, understanding text structures, making inferences and predictions, identifying and evaluating arguments, using context clues and figurative language, annotating and summarizing, and applying critical reading and thinking skills.

This high-intermediate level course refines the skills and strategies students needed to deliver academic presentations and participate in university-level courses. Students learn techniques for organizing and delivering a variety of presentations using academic vocabulary and themes from other Level 4 courses and also develop note-taking strategies that promote active listening and recall in lecture- and discussion-based classes. Students listen to and speak about common Level 4 themes in informal classroom discussions. Students will also participate in a conversation partnership with domestic students, implementing self-guided strategies for improving their communication skills. This course builds graduate students’ mastery of the writing and research skills and grammar and mechanical skills necessary for success in graduate school. Students build strategies for applying field-specific vocabulary, selecting and documenting effective research sources, and presenting ideas in a variety of forms and grammatical structures. Students will engage in peer editing and self-evaluation. Prerequisite: 2.50 semester GPA in Level 4 or equivalent.

AEP 0501 - Academic Writing and Editing Skills: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This class is for international students who need to develop their writing skills from B1+ to B2 proficiency as defined in CEFR, which describes one’s ability at this level to “write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.” With increasing self-reliance, students in this course will engage in the process of writing, write in various modes, practice the basics of secondary research, and develop their writing fluency. Students will also raise their awareness of their most frequent and problematic errors and improve their command of English grammar.

AEP 0510 - Intercultural Communication Level 5: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This course prepares students to become active members of American graduate-level courses by exploring the differing cultural contexts that influence individual communication. Through readings and discussions of communicative theories and case studies, students will understand how cultural similarities and differences can affect individual interactions. Students will apply critical thinking skills, communicate precise meaning in speech and writing, and develop note-taking skills. Through course readings, research, writing and oral presentations and discussions, students further develop their academic and language skills necessary for university success at the graduate level. Prerequisite: 2.50 semester GPA in Level 4 or equivalent.

AEP 0511 - Intercultural Skills for University Success: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This course equips international students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of intercultural communication in the United States. Students will develop their awareness of differences in communication styles through academic readings, case studies, and reflective exercises. Students will apply their learning in real-world interactions with people from other cultures in a variety of assignments that culminate in a final project demonstrating their intercultural communication skills.

AEP 0520 - Reading and Vocabulary Level 5: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This course focuses on improving students’ mastery of the reading and critical inquiry skills necessary for success in graduate school. These skills include identifying and summarizing main ideas and supporting details, recognizing patterns of cohesion, understanding implications and inferences, evaluating sources and arguments, synthesizing information, and applying field-specific vocabulary. Through academic readings, students will learn in-depth methods of applying reading concepts and critical thinking skills to graduate-level texts. Prerequisite: 2.50 semester GPA in Level 4 or equivalent.

AEP 0521 - Academic Reading and Study Skills: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This class is for international students who need to develop their reading skills from B1+ to B2 proficiency as defined in CEFR, which describes one’s ability at this level to “read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints.” Students in this course will practice a variety of reading and vocabulary-building techniques when engaging with college-level content texts. Students will also exercise their critical-thinking skills to interpret implied meanings of texts and respond to what they read in written and oral forms.

AEP 0530 - Listening and Speaking Level 5: Low Advanced

3 Credits

This course refines students’ mastery of oral communication skills required at the graduate level. Students learn techniques for organizing and delivering a variety of presentations using academic vocabulary and themes from other Level 5 courses. Students also develop note-taking strategies that promote active listening and recall. Students apply verbal, non-verbal, visual, and organizational techniques to a variety of discourse situations including class discussions, in-class presentations, and conference presentations. Prerequisite: 2.50 semester GPA in Level 4 or equivalent.

AEP 0531 - Academic Presentations and Speaking Skills: Low Advanced

1 Credit

This class is for international students who need to develop their speaking skills from B1+ to B2 proficiency as defined in CEFR, which describes one’s ability at this level to “take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining [one’s] views.” Students in this course will practice speaking skills in a variety of contexts, including participating in group discussions, and interacting one-on-one. Students will also exercise their ability to follow extended lectures and respond appropriately with questions or comments.

AEP 0541 - Essential Skills for University Success: Low Advanced

2 Credits

This course is designed to empower international students with effective study strategies to excel in the U.S. academic environment. Students will learn time management, note-taking, critical thinking, and exam preparation techniques useful within the American higher education system. Students will engage in practical exercises and receive individualized feedback as they develop skills essential to navigating the diverse learning styles and expectations in an American university.

EAP 1010 - Pathway Recitation Lab I

1 Credit (Repeatable for credit)

This recitation lab is for international students who are enrolled in a humanities class that is part of the Pathway curriculum. The recitation and discussion activities help make the content and types of assignments more accessible for international students.

EAP 1020 - Academic Reading and Study Skills I

3 Credits

This class is for international students who need to develop their reading skills from B1+ to B2 proficiency as defined in CEFR, which describes one’s ability at this level to “read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints.” Students in this course will practice a variety of reading and vocabulary-building techniques when engaging with college level content texts. Students will also exercise their critical thinking skills to interpret implied meanings of texts and respond to what they read in written and oral forms.
