PMR 0101 - Orthopedic Physical Therapy for Musculoskelatal Disorders

1-4 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This interprofessional course will expose students to orthopedic physical and sports therapy and exercise therapy as a first-line alternative or adjunct therapy to chemical and/or surgical interventions. Students will learn to apply anatomical knowledge in differential diagnostic screening and therapeutic decision-making for musculoskeletal disorders. Students will learn how a treatment approach addresses signs and symptoms rather than being prescribed by a particular pathology. Methods of self-care and preventative behaviors for patients with musculoskeletal concerns will be taught. Students will spend two elective afternoons with an exercise physiologist/physiotherapist, 2 with a physical therapist, and 2 shadowing a sports medicine specialist at SLU.

PMR 0302 - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Career Exploration

1-2 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This course may be used to register for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation career exploration The location of the experience may be at a SLU SOM affiliate or at another health care institution.

PMR 0304 - Complex Medical Conditions in Pediatrics-Ranken Jordan

1-4 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This 1 week observation based rotation will provide a look at pediatric rehabilitation and how to address developmental concerns in chronically hospitalized children. This rotation is best suited for students interested in PM&R medicine and want additional exposure to the Pediatric Rehab Medicine subspecialty.

PMR 0305 - PM&R SSM Rehabilitation Career Exploration

1-4 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This elective will provide the student exposure to hospitalized rehabilitation patients and the interdisciplinary team which serves this population. The student will develop an understanding of the evaluation and medical management of these patients as well as the care coordination required to achieve discharge to the community. This rotation is best suited for students with an interest in PM&R, and who want to experience the care continuum for the most impaired patients.

PMR 0439 - Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

2 Credits

Students will work with Pediatric PMR physicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team caring for patients on the rehabilitation service at Ranken Jordan Bridge Hospital. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in PMR consults or co management of patients hospitalized on the chronic medical care service at Ranken Jordan and those hospitalized at Cardinal Glennon Hospital. Students will additionally have the opportunity to spend time with other members of the multidisciplinary team including therapists (PT, OT, speech, and music), infection prevention team, prosthetics and orthotics. The specific schedule will be finalized based on the student’s interest and career goals as well as service availability.

PMR 0901 - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Direct Patient Care

1-12 Credits (Repeatable for credit)

This course may be used to register for a Pediatrics elective. The elective experience must fulfill the requirements for a direct-patient care elective. The location of the experience may be at a SLU SOM affiliate or at another health care institution.
