Spanish - Intermediate, Microcredential

The Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish consists of seven or nine required credit hours, depending on the courses taken. Satisfactory completion of the required courses would allow the student to develop the necessary skills to conduct intermediate-level communication in Spanish through the acquisition of appropriate vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening comprehension, speaking capabilities and an introduction to Hispanic culture.

The Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish aligns itself with all other programs in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in that it is designed to help students gain a broader understanding of themselves, as well as the languages and cultures of others. This inherently fosters an understanding and appreciation for diverse perspectives and represents a crucial virtue in today's globalized world.

The Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish would be available to all degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students. While required courses are offered in person during the fall and spring semesters, those same required courses are frequently offered online during the summer. Thus, depending on when students take those courses, they can complete the Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish in person and/or online.

Continuation Standards

Students are expected to earn a grade of "C" or better in each required course. Students who do not achieve the "C" or better grade in a required course will be expected to repeat the course in an attempt to achieve the "C" or better grade. Students may repeat a required course one time. Failure to achieve the "C" or better grade after one repeat attempt will have the student dismissed from the Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish.

The following required courses for the Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish are regularly offered on both the St. Louis and the Madrid campuses: SPAN 1010, 1020 and 2010. Thus, a St. Louis student may complete the Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish in Madrid (partially or entirely), and a SLU-Madrid student may complete it at the St. Louis campus (partially or entirely). This is the case for the nine-credit pathway.

Because SPAN 1200 is only offered on the St. Louis campus, the seven-credit pathway for the Microcredential in Intermediate Spanish cannot be completed entirely in Madrid.
